Language and Culture in Spain

Accommodations

Student Residence

Students stay in double, same-gender rooms in a mixed-gender residence that houses both Accent and other international students. Each room is furnished with individual beds, bed lamps, desks, drawers, a storage area (closet and bins), bed linens and towels. Rooms are equipped with WIFI. In the residence, participants are provided with a half board meal plan at the cafeteria on the premises. The student residence is located in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Madrid, near the Retiro Park and in the heart of the Barrio de Salamanca.

UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange alternative lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.

Homestay

Students may choose to stay in a single or double occupancy room in a homestay with carefully selected host families, and receive half board (which includes breakfast and dinner daily). Homestay accommodations provide students with an opportunity to observe first-hand how the Spanish live. Homes are within the Madrid city limits, with varying commutes to classes of 15 to 45 minutes by walking and metro.

Meals

Students housed in the student residence receive a cafeteria meal plan that includes two meals per day on weekdays (M-F) and one meal per day on weekends/holidays, except during Holy Week (Tuesday to Sunday). Specificities of the meal plan will be detailed onsite.

Students who select the homestay option will receive breakfast and dinner daily.

The cost of buying groceries is included in the estimated expenses section of the program budget.

Excursions & Activities

As part of the program, students will go on an overnight excursion to Salamanca. More details about this excursion will be shared during program information sessions.

Accent will also plan a series of free or inexpensive activities which may include lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, sporting events, walking tours and dinners. Students will also participate in several cultural activities, including museum visits and optional bullring tickets.

Get to Know Your Destination

Lonely Planet Madrid is a beguiling place with an energy that carries one simple message: this city really knows how to live.

Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk

Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible. However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
