Introduction to Winemaking

Accommodations

Students will be staying in single dorm rooms on a university campus in Dijon. Linen, sheets and towels are furnished and changed every two weeks. Washing machines and dryers are available on the first floor of the dorm (named "Pavillon" in French). You will have a sink in your room. Showers and restrooms are shared on each floor between 10 rooms.

Students will be sharing rooms in hostels when on excursions to wine regions of Europe.

UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange alternative lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.

Meals

Morning breakfasts are at student expense. On class days all lunches (cafeteria self-service choice) and several dinners downtown (menu restaurants) are included in the program fee. Many meals will be provided in local restaurants when on excursion to wineries. There are also several inexpensive sandwich-kebab shops near the dorm.

Excursions and Day Trips

The program includes many excursions to local wineries, tasting rooms, provincial countryside, museums and more. An overnight trip into Switzerland is also an exciting opportunity offered.

See the archived syllabus on the Courses page for a detailed list of all excursions.

Get to Know Your Destination

According to Lonely Planet:

Dijon, mustard capital of the universe, is one of France's most appealing provincial cities, with an inviting center graced by elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings. Despite its long history, modern Dijon is a lively, dynamic city with 24,000 university students and thriving cultural scene.
Dijon served as the capital of the dukes of Burgundy from the 11th to 15th centuries, reaching its golden age during the 14th and 15th centuries under Philip the Bold, John the Fearless and Philip the Good. During their reigns Dijon was turned into one of the great centers of European art.

Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk

Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible.  However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
