Karen was born in Georgia and grew up knowing that she wanted to study behavior of both people and the natural world. While doing her PhD at the University of Maryland, she spent two years studying wild monkeys in Brazil; she now studies social behavior in monkeys, prairie voles, and seahorses at UC Davis.

A Message to Students and Parents

I am always excited to teach students about the relationship between the brain and behavior; what aspects of our minds we share with our animal relatives, and what capacities make us uniquely human. Europe contains many special resources and opportunities to study these topics, while in a setting in which we can experience so many additional aspects of human culture and creativity."
