Accommodations
UC Davis may have to change the accommodation location and type. Should this be necessary, we will arrange alternative lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners, WiFi and other conveniences may not be available in all locations.
Accommodations for your program may include same-gender or mixed-gender housing and rooms may be shared with one or more students. You may request a roommate, and we will do our best to consider mutual requests when making housing assignments and/or sharing them with our program partners. However, please note that roommate requests cannot be guaranteed, as housing arrangements depend on availability and local accommodations.

Excursions & Activities
Bring your coursework to life through immersive excursions, cultural workshops, and academic visits across Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Throughout the program, you'll engage with local communities, explore China's rich history and traditions, and experience firsthand how culture, technology, and sustainability intersect in one of the world's most dynamic regions.
Highlights may include:
- Experience Cantonese culture through workshops in lion dance, Wing Chun martial arts, calligraphy, and introductory Cantonese language.
- Explore historic Guangzhou by visiting sites such as the Chen Clan Academy, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Shamian Island, Sanyuan Temple, and Canton Tower.
- Discover local food traditions during a guided market visit and Cantonese culinary experience featuring regional specialties and dim sum culture.
- Travel aboard China's high-speed rail from Guangzhou to Shenzhen.
- Visit BYD, a global leader in electric vehicle innovation, to learn about clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable transportation.
- Experience Shenzhen's innovation ecosystem through interactive exhibits at the Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum and explorations of the city's modern urban development.
- Enjoy Southern China's natural beauty with a hike on Wutong Mountain, a visit to Hl River.
- Connect with local experts through academic seminars and discussions on topics including Chinese history, migration, language, sustainability, and contemporary society.
- Reflect on your learning through group discussions, presentations, and shared experiences with your cohort throughout the program.
Excursions are integrated into the academic curriculum, allowing you to deepen your understanding of China's past and present while developing intercultural awareness through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
Get to Know Your Destination
China
As the world's second-largest economy and one of the oldest continuous civilizations, China blends ancient traditions and rapid modernization. Home to more than 1.4 billion people and incredible cultural, linguistic, and geographic diversity, China plays a significant role in shaping today's global economy, technology, and environmental future. From historic landmarks and cultural traditions to high-speed rail networks and cutting-edge innovations, students will gain firsthand insight into a country where history and progress exist side by side.
Guangzhou
Known as the gateway to Southern China, Guangzhou is a vibrant metropolis where centuries of history meet modern urban life. As one of China's oldest trading ports, the city has long been a center of commerce, cultural exchange, and innovation. Guangzhou is the heart of Cantonese culture, famous for its distinctive cuisine, language, and traditions. Students will explore historic temples, bustling markets, and modern city districts while gaining insight into the region's rich cultural heritage and its role as one of China's leading economic centers.

Shenzhen
Shenzhen is one of China's most remarkable success stories. Once a small fishing village, it has transformed into a global hub for technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation in just a few decades. Often called the "Silicon Valley of China," Shenzhen is home to many of the country's leading technology and manufacturing companies. Students will experience a city at the forefront of technological advancement, sustainability, and urban development while exploring how innovation shapes everyday life in modern China.

Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk
Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible. However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
