Accommodations
Program participants will find their home away from home in a comfortable guest house, screened by CFHI Local Coordinators in Accra and following CFHI’s health and safety guidelines. The guest house is located in a residential neighborhood of Mamprobi, Accra, 15-20 minutes from the clinical partner site. For added comfort and support, the CFHI local coordinator resides on-site. In some cases, CFHI scholars share the house and/or a room with fellow program participants. Going beyond mere lodging, staying in a local house provides a unique opportunity to learn about the local culture.
UC Davis may have to change the accommodation location and type. Should this be necessary, we will arrange alternative lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners, WiFi and other conveniences may not be available in all locations.
Meals
Two meals a day are included on this program.
Excursions & Activities
Short excursions and day trips are included during orientation week.
Orientation Week Sample Schedule:
- Guided city tour and welcome dinner
- Visit to crafts market
- Slavery museum tour
- Beach day
- Tour of clinics and hospitals where students will be rotating
- Tour botanical gardens
- Overnight excursion to Cape Coast, with guided tour of Elmina Castle, historical insight into the slave trade, and group dinner
- Forest canopy walk
Get to Know Your Destination
Located in West Africa, Ghana has a long and rich cultural history and is considered one of the most stable and democratic countries in Africa. With strong political and economic systems, vibrant cities, and friendly people, Ghana offers a vibrant, cultural experience.
Despite strong economic growth and a stable political system, there are still challenges in providing quality healthcare for children throughout the country. Social and economic conditions have continued to impact the health of children, with malaria, anemia, and malnutrition as the leading contributors to the childhood morbidity in Ghana.
Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk
Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible. However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
