A city street scene in Kigali, Rwanda, featuring modern high-rise buildings with reflective glass facades on both sides. Motorcyclists and a few pedestrians navigate the clean, well-maintained road bordered by manicured hedges and sidewalks. The sky is overcast with gray clouds, adding a dramatic backdrop to the urban landscape. In the distance, more buildings, including a distinctively shaped skyscraper, contribute to the city's skyline.

Connect with Rwanda: Exploring One Health for a More Sustainable World

Program Orientation

Pre-Departure Orientation

There will be 3-4 program-specific, required orientation meetings with the instructor and/or program provider at UC Davis. This orientation addresses travel, packing, academics, intercultural preparation, health and safety, and more. It also provides you the opportunity to meet with others on your program. Prior to orientation, you will receive a Program Specific Guide that will further support program preparation.

On Site Orientation

Soon after arrival to the program destination, you will have an on-site orientation. The on-site orientation serves to introduce you to the new environment as well as provide on-site resources and support.

Travel Arrangements

You will be booked on a group roundtrip flight with the other participants, departing from San Francisco International Airport. You will be responsible for transport to and from SFO. Within Rwanda, you will be provided an airport pick up and drop off.

You will enter Rwanda as a tourist. The Global Learning Hub can provide a verification of enrollment letter when requested.

On-Site Transportation

Once in Rwanda, transportation between study sites is by private hired vans. For some sites, student accommodations are approximately a 15-minute walk from study sites and are walkable. Transportation during day trips and other activities will be provided. Any transportation outside of these arrangements will be your responsibility. Local transportation will also be addressed during your onsite orientation.

Entry Requirements for U.S. Citizens

A valid passport is required for this program. Anyone entering Rwanda must apply for a tourist visa and produce evidence of vaccination against yellow fever. Students will need to apply for a visa once accepted into the program; more information about visas can be found on this webpage from the Rwandan government. U.S. citizens should check the U.S. Department of State website for other travel or entry requirements

Entry Requirements for Non-U.S. Citizens

A valid passport is required for this program. Anyone entering Rwanda must apply for a tourist visa and produce evidence of vaccination against yellow fever. Students will need to apply for a visa once accepted into the program; more information about visas can be found on this webpage from the Rwandan government. Non-U.S. citizens should check for other entry or travel requirements via the consulate of their travel destination(s): Rwanda Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Ultimately, securing a visa is your responsibility. Do not wait until the last minute – if accepted, there will be a deadline by which you will need to provide proof of your visa. Global Learning Hub will supply a verification of enrollment or other necessary documents upon request.

International students in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 visa interested in traveling abroad, should ensure the U.S. visa in their passport has at least 90 days validity remaining whenever they travel abroad. If the U.S. visa expires or is about to expire (even if the I-20 is current), students may be required to apply for the visa to their program abroad country in their home country.

Non-U.S. citizens unable to gain access to the program abroad country will be subject to cancellation fees as shown in the cancellation schedule. For this reason, international students are highly encouraged to research entry to their destination country well in advance, and before enrolling in the program.

Insurance

Participants are enrolled in international health insurance and UC Traveler Insurance for the duration of the program and will be provided with specific coverage information.
