On this Summer Abroad program, you can:

- Enroll in UC Davis courses to fulfill degree, major, minor, or GE requirements as listed in the General Catalog.
- Experience academic coursework enriched by both the program’s location(s) and activities.

The above syllabus is representative of this program. The instructor provides a term-specific program syllabus to enrolled students. The program syllabus and schedule, including the daily itinerary and planned activities, are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
Class Format
Students will take classes at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago. The course will cover an of Chilean history, Popular Unity, and the Dictatorship, with a focus on 1970- present. In addition to lectures, you will visit important major historical memory sites, including Londres 38 and Villa Grimaldi. You will have the opportunity to interact with some of Chile’s most important politicians, activists, artists and academics. You will also have opportunities to engage with local Chilean students.

- Spanish (SPA) 175. Human Rights and Memory in Chile (4 units)
- Specific historical tendencies and issues in Latin American culture(s) from precolombian times to present. Studies of literature, film, art, journalism, and performance. Focus on issues of aesthetics, politics, identity, and globalization. May be taught abroad.
General Education: Arts & Humanities (AH); Visual Literacy (VL); World Cultures (WC); Writing Experience (WE). - Spanish (SPA) 198. Directed Group Study (2 units)
- This course includes participation on excursions and tours and attendance to guest lectures. Students are often asked to write reflective pieces. Assignment topics vary by program.

Human Rights (HMR) 140B. Art & Politics of Memory: Truth, Justice, Reconciliation & Human Rights (4 units)
- Critical exploration of the role of art and memory in the dictatorships, authoritarian societies, civil conflicts, and genocides of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Case studies focus on the violation of massive human rights and political and cultural conflict for truth, justice, and reconciliation in the aftermath of those violations. Emphasis on how memory is constructed and contested by states, artists, writers, historians and different ethnic and political communities.
