Syllabus

The program syllabus and schedule, including the daily itinerary and planned activities, are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.

Class Format

  • Classes are held at the School of Biotechnology, Assumption University located at the Hua Mak campus in Bangkok. Class is a daily open discussion with lecture in the morning Monday – Friday followed by an afternoon laboratory session Monday - Wednesday. Other afternoons are free time.
  • Learn experientially. Core course laboratory investigations examine environmental samples collected during local class field trips. Weekend field trips provide opportunities for cultural immersion. Weekend field trips are optional to provide flexibility for free time that some previous students used to travel to locations beyond those covered by the program.
  • Excursions and activities for this program include many outdoor experiences. There is a 6 day excursion to Phuket, which past participants described as a very active seaside experience. You can look forward to meeting locals and other travelers, trying fabulous food, hiking in urban and rural settings, water activities and more while on this program.
Earn GE credit! Some courses on this program offer GE credit. Expand the sections below to view course descriptions and type of credit offered.

Courses

You will enroll in the course set below. Auditing is not an option. UC Davis programs are academic programs so participants should expect a substantial amount of course work.

Students should take FST 104L and 198 or MIC 102, 103L and MIC 198 as is appropriate for their major. Students that have previously taken MIC 101 or FST 104L should contact the instructor. Cross-department combinations such as FST 104L & MIC 198 (or vice versa) cannot be accommodated

  • Microbiology (MIC) 102. Introductory Microbiology (3 units)
  • Essentials of microbial biology, emphasizing, phylogeny, physiology, genetics, ecology, and pathogenesis. Interactions with other microbes, humans, and the biosphere. Uses of microbes in agriculture and biotechnology. Not open for credit to students who have completed courses 101 or 104. GE credit: QL, SE, SL.
  • Microbiology (MIC) 103L. Introductory Microbiology Laboratory (2 units)
  • Introduction to principles and laboratory methods employed in working with microorganisms. Designed for students requiring microbiology for professional school admission. Not open to students who completed course 101 before Spring 2016, or who have completed courses 102L or 104L. GE credit: SE, WE.
  • Microbiology (MIC) 198. Directed Group Study of Microbiology (3 units, Pass/No Pass grading only)
  • This course includes participation on excursions and tours and attendance to guest lectures. Students are often asked to write reflective pieces. Assignment topics vary by program.

OR

  • Food Science and Technology (FST) 104L. Food Microbiology Laboratory (4)
  • FST majors have the option to take FST 104L.GE credit: QL, SE, VL, WE
  • Food Science and Technology (FST) 198. Directed Group Study of Food Science (4 units, P/NP grading only)
